Two cities with an important role in the construction of the Portuguese identity, as a nation and religion.
We set off from Porto towards Guimarães and start by visiting the Guimarães Castle, symbol of the cradle of the Portuguese nation.
We`ll visit to the Chapel of S. Miguel, where D. Afonso Henriques, the First King of Portugal wsa baptized.
Right next door, we`ll visit the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, an imposing palace from the 15th century which is now the official residence of the President of the Republic in Northern Portugal.
A selfie next to the statue of D. Afonso Henriques will be followed by a walk through the oldest and historic Santa Maria street arriving at Largo da Oliveira where we will be able to appreciate the medieval center that is Unesco heritage and see the Oliveira Square and Church. We`ll say goodbye to Guimarães with a photo of the wall where there is an mythical inscription saying “Here was born Portugal”.
After a delicious traditional lunch, it is time to visit Braga. The center of Braga has about 105 churches! It is the capital of the Baroque style and the oldest city in the country with more than 2000 years!
We`ll visit the Roman ruins of the city, the baroque fountains and the magnanimous Cathedral de Braga – the oldest in the country!
Afterwards, a walk along longest pedestrian way in this country and see some of the most emblematic baroque buildings, the gardens of Santa Bárbara and the Arco da Porta Nova, a landmark of Braga.
Finally, we`ll visit one of the most beautiful and imposing sanctuaries of the country: The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Braga, with an impressively beautiful stairway.
To get at the very top of the Sanctuary, we`ll use the first funicular built in the Iberian Peninsula. It is currently the oldest in the world to working with an amazing ancient system water balance!
